Each class will look at a specific genre within Musical Theatre including Contemporary, Legit, Rock/Pop and Sondheim. Within these classes, actors are asked to perform a song from their rep with a backing track as accompaniment. Every actor will receive feedback and constructive critique along with re-direction. We’ll be looking at how the music and lyrics can inform your interpretation of the song and how to make those bold choices that will make you stand out.
The final class will look at working each actor’s go-to audition piece for a first-round audition and making sure you get that recall!
These classes are designed for actors over 18 years of age who have acting and singing experience, are auditioning for drama school or have just graduated and want to keep their skills sharp!
It’s also perfect for any classical actors to feel confident with their musical theatre skills if it’s not something they have trained in specifically.
Our musical theatre coaches
To say Musical Theatre is Zach's passion is an understatement - he lives and breathes Musical Theatre!
Zach is currently working as Associated MD on both the UK tour of We Will Rock You and Sleepless, due to open in June. He is also a regular vocal coach for the top drama schools in London.
Working with West End casting teams, Zach has witnessed all the 'do' and 'don't' scenarios in an audition. Musical Theatre is arguably one of the hardest practices on stage. Three hours of dancing, singing and acting is not easy.
You have to consistently work on your voice and body to make sure you are performance ready, eight shows a week. Your voice and body are your tools for work... so they need to be maintained and encouraged to flourish.
The Actor's Community can offer both one-to-one coaching and classes for all actors who want to improve their vocal skills. Whether you are just starting out, looking to get into drama school, are a recent graduate or a professional actor who is needing to go over audition material, The Actor's Community is here to give you a helping hand.
MT for Tv with mark rowley, Harry Mcentire and adam gillian
One of the few, if not the only course of its kind, 'MT for TV' is a transitional course for any and all actors who work predominantly in Musical Theatre who want to audition for more screen work or move over entirely.
Merging over into the world of TV and Film can be tricky. So many Musical Theatre actors think the transition is an easy one and it’s not. There is skill and technique that has to be applied and the camera training on any Musical Theatre degree or diploma programme just isn't enough.
A lot of casting directors will not see Musical Theatre actors because they generally over act on tape - it's that harsh. So if you do get a life changing self tape that will break you into the world of TV and Film don’t screw it up!
It’s our aim to bring on some known TV and Film actors to guide you through the process and give you the tools to nail your next self tape audition. In this class we can give you the basics but consistency and practice is key. You might be going up for a part against other actors with lists of TV credits, so the odds are already against you! If you want to have a serious go at it then join us and learn what to do and most importantly, what not to do.
The first class will be led by Adam (Hadestown, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, BBC's Counsel) who has worked in both Musical Theatre and TV. It will look at acting through song with students, looking at the choices you would make for an audition or live theatre environment. This includes text analysis, storytelling, emotional trajectory, working within genre and giving an honest, real performance that works for stage.
The second class, led by either Mark (The Last Kingdom, Guns Akimbo) or Harry (The Last Kingdom, Episodes, Victoria) is the very next day and will look at how to get the most out of your self-tape; how to make the camera work for you; the technical aspects of working on screen and with a film crew and how to analyse and prepare a script specifically for screenwork.
These sessions are back to back every week.
